After pick up from your Reykjavik accommodation, we’ll drive along the distinctive south coast of Iceland until we reach the beautiful waterfall of Seljalandsfoss . During an enjoyable walk along the path which leads up to this glorious waterfall you should be ready to take plenty of photos! You can also walk behind the roaring water streams but be careful as the ground is uneven and can be damp so you can easily lose your balance. However, the views and the sounds from behind the waterfall are worth the effort and will fill you with awe.
From Seljalandsfoss we continue to Thorsmork , a wide valley which gets its name from Thor, the Viking God of Thunder. It is sheltered from both sides by glaciers which offer spectacular views and often ensure good weather too.
Our drive through the valley will offer spectacular sceneries of the surrounding steep mountains and we’ll cross raging rivers, gentle brooks, pass caves and giant boulders before stopping at what’s left from the glacial lagoon at the Gigjokull glacier . Here we’ll have time for a hike to explore the aftermath of the huge fast flowing flood, caused by the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in April 2010, which decimated the lagoon and left a blackened area. You may even be able to hike to the edge of the imposing glacier and see where it crawls down to the lowlands from the summit of the volcano. There will also be an opportunity to walk amongst the wooded area and perhaps to go uphill for some majestic panoramic views from the top. You can also hike along the scenic canyon of Stakkholtsgja and view the nice waterfall at the end of it. Thorsmork is the most popular hiking area in the country and for good reason. It absolutely takes your breath away when you stand on top of many of the hills and mountains that you’ll find there. Visitors are always left in awe of the raw unadulterated power of nature and its beauty, and become enchanted by its grace.
