The Golden Circle Express Tour

Thingvellir National Park and Öxarárfoss Waterfall

The  Golden Circle Express Tour route will begin with a visit to the Thingvellir National Park, an area that is of great historical significance to the Icelandic people as well as containing many striking geological features. It’s the place where the Eurasian and American tectonic plates meet and also houses the rocks where Althingi (the Icelandic Parliament) was founded in 930 AD, which makes it the oldest parliamentary site in the world. You can admire the  beautiful waterfall nearby and Öxarárfoss and Thingvellir have been nominated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Geysir Geothermal Area

Our next stop will be at the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur where we will look at the famous Geysir and other hot springs. One of them is the Strokkur geyser which projects steaming hot water roughly every five to ten minutes to a height of about 20-30 meters. We will have our lunch here at a local food place.

Gullfoss Waterfall - The Golden Waterfall

Gullfoss will be our next destination after lunch. It is the most famous waterfall in Iceland on  the Hvíta river. It is a truly powerful and inspirational place where you can stand so close to the roaring water that you feel the glacial drops on your face.

Crater Kerid

The last stop on our route is Kerid, a volcanic crater lake. It was first thought that Kerid was formed by a huge volcanic eruption as is normal for volcanic craters.  Later research revealed that it was most likely a cone volcano which erupted and emptied its magma reserve. Afterwards, the cone collapsed into the magma chamber and created the crater lake bordered by bright red volcanic rock.

Please note that because of limited daylight hours, the Crater Kerid stop is not available from November to February.
